The Cornerstone of Our Faith

Ephesians 2:20 declares:

“Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone.”

In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the most important stone in a building. It was the first stone laid, providing a solid foundation and alignment for the rest of the structure. Without a secure cornerstone, the entire building would be unstable.

Jesus, as the Chief Cornerstone, fulfills this role in our faith. He is the foundation upon which everything else is built. His truth, grace, and love provide stability and strength, ensuring that our lives are aligned with God’s purpose.

What Does It Mean That Jesus Is "The Chief Cornerstone"?

  1. He Is the Foundation of Our Faith:
Just as a building relies on its cornerstone for stability, our faith is rooted in Jesus. Without Him, everything we build is at risk of crumbling. He provides a secure foundation that cannot be shaken.

  2. He Aligns Our Lives:
The cornerstone determines the position and alignment of the entire structure. When Jesus is at the centre of our lives, He aligns us with God’s truth, guiding our decisions, relationships, and purpose.

  3. He Unites Believers:
As the Cornerstone, Jesus brings unity to the church, the body of Christ. He connects believers across generations and cultures, creating one structure built on the foundation of His love and grace.

Building Your Life on the Chief Cornerstone

  1. Evaluate Your Foundation:
Reflect on the foundations you have built your life upon. Are you relying on your own strength, ambitions, or the approval of others? These foundations are unstable and cannot sustain you. Jesus, the Chief Cornerstone, is the only foundation that will never fail.

  2. Trust in His Stability:
Life’s challenges can feel overwhelming, but when your life is built on Jesus, you can stand firm. His truth and grace provide unshakable stability, even in the face of uncertainty.

  3. Align Yourself with Him:
Allow Jesus to be the guiding force in your life. Seek His wisdom in prayer and through Scripture, and let His truth shape your priorities, relationships, and decisions.

The Impact of a Cornerstone-Centered Life

  • Strength in Adversity:
When Jesus is your foundation, you can face life’s storms with confidence, knowing that He holds everything together.

  • Unity with Others:
Building your life on Jesus connects you to a larger community of believers. Together, we form a spiritual house that glorifies God.

  • Purpose and Direction:
A life aligned with Jesus is filled with purpose. He guides us toward God’s plan, helping us live lives that reflect His love and truth.

A Personal Reflection

Is Jesus truly the cornerstone of your life? Are there areas where you’ve tried to build on other foundations?

Take time to reflect on how you can centre your life on Him more fully. Surrender any unstable foundations and commit to building your life on His truth, grace, and love.
